Something Else by The Kinks

June 30, 2006

KinksThe Kinks are one of those bands that people don’t buy the albums of, concentrating on their embarrasment of riches single-wise. Apart from ‘Village Green…’ people have stayed away. Well, for those wanting to get deeper into the world of Ray Davies, you need to buy ‘Something Else by The Kinks’. Kicking off with the original (and best) version of David Watts, the LP means business from the word go. ‘Harry Rag’ is vintage Davies echoing the Britain of yesteryear, and bonus tracks include the incredible ‘Autumn Almanac’, the great lost Kinks single. The album closes with ‘Waterloo Sunset’… what more do you want from an LP?[Mof Gimmers]

Festival of the Day: Cambridge Folk Festival, 27th July

June 30, 2006

EmmylouThursday 27th of July sees the weekend kicking of for the Cambridge Folk Festival. It’s always been one of the big draws in the festival circuit, and this year’s line up proves to be no different from previous years. The big gun for 2006 is the wonderful Emmylou Harris, famed for her work with Gram Parsons in the Fallen Angels, and the aching voice on ‘Oh Sister’ on Dylan’s ‘Desire’. One not to miss.

Also playing will be Fairport’s master, Richard Thompson, alongside former Catatonia frontwoman, turned Alt.Country starlet, Cerys Matthews. Intimate surrounding and a mellow crowd will be the main attraction once again.[Mof Gimmers]

Masterful Psychedelia in the form of The Porpoise Song by The Monkees

June 30, 2006

The Monkees are too often derided as a joke band. Labelled with the unfortunate tag of boy band, and worse still, picked at by The Byrds in ‘So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star?’. What people missed out was the fact that Nesmith & Co wrote some of the finest bubblegum known to ears. When the mood took them, the created vast washes of psychedelia, dripping in wacked out sounds. The Porpoise Song is designed to flip your lid.

Stormbringer by John & Beverley Martyn

June 29, 2006

JohnbevWhen it comes to John Martyn, ever two bit muso tells you that Solid Air is his zenith, and that’s the place to start your collection. Rot. When John gatecrashed his wife’s record deal, together they made one of the great lost LPs of the acid folk genre. Stormbringer is full to bursting with brilliant hooks and ideas.

Stormbringer is looser, catchier and has more depth than Solid Air, and tracks like ‘Sweet Honesty’ have a funk that doesn’t normally belong in a folk LP. The title track is one of the greatest songs ever released on the Island imprint. If you don’t own this LP, your summer will surely suffer. Buy it before the sun disappears. [Mof Gimmers]
