Do you own ‘Evolution’ by The Hollies?

Hollies_evolution_1Psychedelia took off in the mid sixties, and so did many beat groups with it. Obviously, The Fab 4 sat at the top of the psychpop pile, but real contenders to the throne were the wonderful Hollies. ‘King Midas in Reverse’ had set Nash & Co off on a wylde (sic) phased journey, and ‘Butterfly’ cemented the zenith in their work with, their masterpiece, ‘Evolution‘.

If you like gonzoid ideas rubbing shoulders with catchy melodies, then this is your album. The staggering ‘Stop Right There’ with gypsy violins and muted guitar should have brought them greater affection, and the refried acid of ‘Water on the Brain’ sounds like the best single you’ve never heard. Full to bursting with ace ideas, sublime songwriting and hooks catchier than measles, this is an album that should grace any record collection. [Mof Gimmers]
