The Byrds mash garage and psyche in the seminal ‘Fifth Dimension’

Fifth_dimensionFor those of you who think that the Byrds are a mere Dylan covers band, think again. The Byrds have a clutch of killer long players, with most of the gems being ignored as singles. The first high quality LP from the group was the jaw dropping Fifth Dimension. The most famous cut featured is the still mind boggling ‘Eight Miles High’ with THAT guitar sound. On further inspection, the most rewarding bits of the LP are a couple of other. ‘What’s Happening??!’, penned by David Crosby is one of the most achingly gorgeous psyche tunes of a generation, and it is quite possible that it features Crosby’s best ever vocal performance. Also worth noting is the sublime garage of ‘I See You’; quite possibly one of the most electrifying performances ever put on vinyl.
