MySpace Artist of the day – Colorama

Colorama
Well, trawling through MySpace is a terrible affair mostly, but the latest thing to get all giddy about is the wonderful Colorama. The ‘Rama-lama is the brain child of Carwyn Ellis, a Welsh wonder, now seemingly based in Liverpool. The Colorama CV reads well, with Ellis performing or collaborating with, among others Edwyn Collins, UNKLE, Shane MacGowan and the North Mississippi Allstars… oh, and Oasis, but we won’t hold that against him.

The tracks of Colorama echo the inventiveness of Pet Sounds (with chugging grooves and sound effects) and the keen ear of someone like John Sebastian. ‘The Sound’ is a great example of this playful spirit, but eclisping that is the fabulous ‘The Inevitable’ which aches and bows with a tenderly cracked vocal dug straight from 1968.

Stations is something more poppy. After the terrifying arse end of a piano intro fades, a Macca-esque pop song kicks on, which maybe shows Ellis’ true colours. Which reminds me… the only bad thing about this band is the missing ‘u’ from Colorama. That’s nothing to grumble about really… not in the face of great pop/psych like this.
