Festival of the Day: Reading Festival

August 17, 2006

FestI’ve already looked at the Reading Festival, which includes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, Primal Scream and Muse in an eclectic line up. Well, for people going to the biggest mosh pit in Europe, you could end up on TV! How? Well, whether you’re a seasoned veteran of throwing bottles of piss at Daphne & Celeste, or whether it’s you first time; whether you’re a mardy Emo kid, or an amphetemine fuelled punk… you could end up being filmed by the Beeb. They are
looking for people who enjoy being filmed, and are willing to give up a
little of their time over the weekend to show the viewers what their
personal festival experience is like.

If you’re interested in participating then please contact emile.nawagamuwa@bbc.co.uk.

Festival of the Day: Creamfields, Liverpool, Aug 26th

August 9, 2006

GoldfrappI need little excuse to put a picture of Alison Goldfrapp up. Thankfully I have one though. At the end of this month, Goldfrapp will be taking their own brand of glam-squelch to Creamfields, a festival that has always filled me with dread. 40,000 people on E’s is not something that appeals. That said, their are those who love it, and should they find themselves at this year’s festival, they’ll be able to watch Gnarls Barkley, Coldcut, DJ Shadow (showcasing his new, and slightly dodgy Hy-Phy) The Zutons, the hilarious pantomime of The Prodigy as well as 2 Many Djs and a DJ set from New Order’s Peter Hook.

I’m coming up already…

Festival of the Day: Wasted Punk Festival, Blackpool, Aug 10th

August 8, 2006

PunksWhen John Lydon sang
"NOOOO FUUUUTURE", little did he realise that punk would be thriving
30 years after ‘year dot’. To confirm it, this weekend sees Wasted, the premier
punk fest, celebrating its 10th birthday… and it’s got a line-up to match the
party.

The impressive line-up includes The Damned, Sham 69, Hugh
Cornwell (of The Stranglers), The Rezillos, Goldblade, Slaughter and the Dogs,
Angelic Upstarts, UK Subs, The Undertones, The Vibrators and Eddie and The
Hotrods. Aside from the name acts, there is also a clutch of bands with amusing
names like The Lambrusco Kids and Bardyard Masturbator. Oh, and Chas and Dave
are on.

Tickets are £75 for the
weekend, and £30 for one day. Buy tickets from the official site.

Festival of the Day: Porthcawl Elvis festival, Porthcawl, 29th Sep, Prices starting at £7.50

August 7, 2006

Elvis_2Sometimes, you see something and you think it’s too good to be true. The Porthcawl Elvis Festival is one of those things. For those unaware, Elvis is completely dead, so the festival promises to be a ramshackle mixture of people in bad sequined capes, and fantastic impressionists belting out some of the finest Rock’n’Roll ever made.

Porthcawl is usually a sleepy seaside village, midway between Cardiff and Newport. September will see it transformed into Rockabilly/Burger heaven, with Elvis discos, competitions to see who looks most like Elvis and of course, tribute bands-a-plenty. Depending on your mood, this will be funny as hell, or a touching gathering of those who loved the great man.

Festival of the Day: Secret Garden 2006, 18 August

August 3, 2006

Prince_busterThe Secret Garden Party is exactly what it says on the tin. A secret. So how are you supposed to get there and see Mr Blue Beat, Prince Buster, wreck up the place? Well, all we know so far is that it will be held in Huntingdon (East Anglia) and that directions will be printed on the back of the tickets, and posted up on the official website a week before the event.

Starring at the festival, other than Prince Buster, will be Graham Coxon, Lily Allen, Ok Go, Adam Freeland, Holly Golightly and a reunion by ravers, Utah Saints. They also promise to have some ace tree houses too.

Festival of the Day: Bestival, Isle of Wight, 8 September

August 2, 2006

Lily_allenBestival, taking place in the lovely Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight looks to be one of the most eclectic of this year’s festivals. Starting on the 8th of September, procedings will be curated by Rob Da Bank from Radio One (although that doesn’t mean much to me) and will feature diverse acts from the incredible Devendra Banhart to the surly chopped agit-punk of The Fall and the latest kid on the block, the tasty Lily Allen (pictured).

Other acts on the bill are The Pet Shop Boys, King Creosote,  Scissor Sisters, John Martyn, The Stranglers… and Brian Eno (!?!)
