10 overlooked gems of Bob Dylan

September 11, 2006

Bob_dylan_2With Bob Dylan having a chart-topper over the pond, and him making himself known to the world again through documentaries, radio shows and his books, it’s time to evaluate some of Zimmerman’s work that gets overlooked in favour of tripe like ‘Blowing In The Wind’.

Here, I’ll pick ten great Dylan songs that don’t get the exposure they deserve, and are a must have in any discerning record collection. Leave a comment of your own picks if you disagree, or if I’ve omitted your fave Dylan track.

Read over for the Top 10.

September 7, 2006

Editor_picks
With summer gone, and the kids about to go back to school (or uni), it’s time to rekindle your passion with music as the house will now have genuine ‘quiet moments’. So to celebrate, here’s my Top 10 picks of the moment.

1. Son of Blunderbuss – Various Artists (LP). Previously reviewed on PopJunkie, and absolutely indispensible to anyone with an interest in garage and sleaze. Includes the dancefloor monster ‘I Gotta Move’ by Rusty Day and the incredible ‘The Hook’ by The Candy Johnson Show. A limited run means act quickly. (available to buy here)

Rock & Roll Myths No3 – Queen say ‘It’s Fun To Smoke Marijuana’ (apparently)

August 29, 2006

Freddie_mercuryQueen, kings of rock pomp are one of the bands in the long queue of the rock and roll myth. It is claimed that, within ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, the group had hidden a ‘backmasked’ message. Backmasking is a message that makes sense when played forwards and backwards. In this case "Another one bites the dust-ah!" says "It’s fun to smoke marijuana" or "decide to smoke marijuana". There is also an contentious message saying "give some acid"… although, I’ve always had Queen down as a poppers and cocaine band myself. Anyway, judge for yourself by clicking this link.

This article contains no intentional backmasking.

Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ chosen as best guitar solo of all time

August 28, 2006

Gilmour
Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb has the best guitar solo of all time,
according to a new poll chosen by the slack-jawed idiots of Radio Station Planet Rock.

‘…Numb’ was chosen ahead of the opening riff from
the terrible ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ by Guns N’ Roses. Third was Freebird by Lynyrd
Skynyrd, while the Led Zeppelin classic axe fave Stairway to Heaven was in
sixth place. The radio station Planet Rock asked listeners to come up
with a top 40 which included Hotel California and ‘Aqualung’ by Jethro Tull. What annoys about this list is the inclusion of all the usual suspects, ignorning cooking guitarists like Wayne Kramer, John Renbourne… and the solos from every single Sonics record ever. If you ask me, it’s not about technical ability, but fire, passion and inventiveness. So, who would have in your top spots?

10 Ten Songs for a Break-Up

August 10, 2006

MccartneyWith Paul McCartney and Heather Mills going head to head in a big ol’ messy public divorce/PR disaster, it’s time they did some music therapy. We all know that times of pain, anguish and heartbreak need to be soundtracked, so when you hear those songs again, you can shed a sad little tear, or start cussing under your breath and begin to smash the house up. Either, you need music to help you through this time. As Macca is a bit busy locking his ex out of the house, let’s do the compilation for him.

June 23, 2006

BiggeorgeWith MOJO magrag publishing the best 101 Beatles songs in the latest edition, I thought I’d go one step further into Beatle autism. Of course, we all know that The Beatles body of work is vast, and frequently gob smacking. Is there a better psychedelic record than ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’?

So, let’s have a butchers at the post Beatle output, and 10 of the best… then you can shoot me down and disagree.
