The Guess Who miss you

May 17, 2007

The Guess Who (no… not The Who under a different guise) created some wonderful bubblegum psych and hit big in the hit parade with ‘Shakin’ All Over’. Later on in their career, they grew their locks and spoke of peace and love and all that… in between, they broke the girlie hearts with this lovely rendition of I Miss You.

Stevie Wonder sings Superstition on Sesame Street.

May 10, 2007

For no other reason than I’ve been hammering Stevie Wonder LPs all week, I thought I’d include a video of the great man. Performing a super tough version of Superstition on Sesame Street (of all things), watch Stevie in his full pomp! Don’t try saying the headline if you’ve got a lisp…

Tom Waits sings Chocolate Jesus

April 10, 2007

In 1990, on this very day, Tom Waits took Doritos Chips to court for using a ‘Waites’ sound-alike on radio ads. The jury awarded him $2.475 million in punitive damages, Waites comments after the case, ‘now by law I have what I always felt I had…a distinctive voice’… and here it is singing the brilliant Chocolate Jesus.

Mushroom by Can

March 26, 2007

Can, along with Kraftwerk, pioneered the wonderful and weird abstract sounds of Krautrock. Fusing psychedelia with wiry electronics, Krautrock paved the way for thousands of people drawn to the pulsebeat of bips and bops. One of Can’s finest moments was the wonderful Mushroom from Tago Mago. Enjoy.

Iggy beats up The Passenger at The Apollo in ’77

March 25, 2007

One of the most unlikely pop hits in history must be The Passenger by Iggy Pop. It’s tense and loose, angressive and friendly, logical and nonsense. A bag of contradictions that shimmies along with the strut of vintage Stooges and a great "la-la-la" that is catchier than the measles. Check out this great rip-snorting performance from 1977 at The Apollo in Manchester.
